Pick Up Roses Program

Mission

To build a community where aging is embraced with grace, dignity, and joy. We aim to uplift seniors by celebrating their stories, talents, and life journeys—removing sadness, loneliness, or feelings of being “valueless” and reminding each person how deeply their presence matters.

Vision

To create meaningful, interactive experiences that help seniors focus on the great side of their life, bringing laughter, music, memories, and celebration. Through Pick Up Roses, we honor every senior’s legacy while creating opportunities for caregivers (CNA’s 70+) and creative teams to find employment in compassionate service.

Where You Touched the World

Activity: Puzzle of Life’s Journey

Each participant receives a capital letter of their first name.

They pin their letter on a large world map at a location that represents where they lived, traveled, or dreamed of going.

At each placement:

  • A fun paper cutout (animal, cultural object, or landmark) from that region is pinned.
  • A song from that culture/era is played.

Purpose: To shift focus from pain to adventure, opening memories of exploration and cultural joy.

The Work of My Hands

Activity: Career Legacy Showcase

Seniors choose from objects or stickers that represent their careers:

  • Pilot → paper airplane or flight symbol
  • Tailor → sewing machine cutout or fabric swatch
  • Teacher → chalk, pen, or apple
  • Musician → small instrument cutout

While they share stories, a favorite work-related song is played (e.g., classroom tunes, work anthems).

Group applause after each story affirms their value and contributions.

Purpose: To highlight dignity, pride, and the impact of their lifelong work.

My Legacy, My Joy

Activity: Roses of Memory & Celebration

Each participant shares:

  • Their legacy (children, grandchildren, or other blessings).
  • Their favorite food/fruit growing up.
  • Their favorite music (2 songs researched from their era).
  • A famous movie character or a show they loved.

Everyone sings along to 12 birthday songs—celebrating each person as though it is their special day.

Closing with a gratitude circle: each participant says one thing they are grateful for today.

Purpose: To remind them they are cherished, celebrated, and still deeply connected to the community.
